SCSU Alumnus Wins Prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award
While at SCSU, Ms. Johnson worked with a cohort of student researchers led by Dr. Laura Bower-Phipps. The group, self-named, The “Other” Side of Us (TOSU), investigated their experiences as ethnic, gender, and or sexual minority individuals in a teacher preparation program. They presented their work at national conferences and published in two journals.
In reflecting on her time at Southern, Ms. Johnson said,
The academic support I had during my undergrad studies at SCSU was very important because it challenged me to reflect on the whole child, their unique needs and their community. I know I can continue to reach out to the most dedicated, knowledgeable and supportive professors in the field.
She describes her teaching practices as inspired by students.
My students inspire me every day to design fun lessons that stir at their imagination and encourage them to be active learners. I love listening to their unique ideas and scaffold their learning by creating diverse and engaging learning paths to ensure students are being challenged to achieve daily academic goals and their personal dreams. I feel truly blessed for working with a diverse student population and caring teaching staff who teach and inspire me everyday to be an active community leader.
Many congratulations to Arlette Mello Johnson and to Multicultural Magnet School of Bridgeport!
