Building A Better World Through Big Data
On October 13th and 14th Dr. J. Gregory McVerry traveled to Tianjin University of Technology (TuT) in Tianjin China to present at the Big Data, Smart Knowledge Technology International Forum.
Tianjin University of Technology launched the Global Collaboration Center for Big Data.Dr. Liu of the Information and Library Science Department here at SCSU announced the Center. Southern Connecticut State University will work in association with TuT to understand insights from the massive data sets we can now collect and analyze.
Dr. McVerry delivered the opening keynote of the conference. He discussed the need for a new research paradigm necessary for Big Data. Dr. McVerry reviewed scores on national and international assessments and then compared these to investments in educational research.
He then called for new methods when dealing with Big Data. Dr. McVerry discussed the importance of formative design based research. These methodologies draw on engineering and encourage a pragmatic approach of iteration rather than the strict rules of empirical design. Finally Dr. McVerry described howBig Data can transform education in K12 and Higher Education.
