Priority 1 - Expand and Improve Our Campus Facilities
A new destination for the next generation
Our new College of Health and Human Services building will match the outstanding caliber of our nationally acclaimed academic programs and significantly increase our capacity to enroll undergraduate and graduate students who can meet the workforce needs of our region.
The building includes features such as a state-of-the-art health care simulation learning center, nursing labs, extensive human performance teaching and research labs, interprofessional collaboration center, and a new home for our Center for Communication Disorders Clinic.
Construction costs have been paid through state bond funds; however, additional staffing, programs, and specialized equipment are needed in order to fully realize the potential of this spectacular new building. Examples of equipment needs include high fidelity simulation manikins, motion capture treadmill and cameras for 3D movement analysis, bone density testing system, and virtual dissection table. Funds will be raised through direct donations and naming opportunities for key areas of the new building.
Priority 2 - Student Program Support
Create exceptional student experiences – experiential learning
Our professional programs require internships, clinical placements, and field experiences. Last year alone, our college completed approximately 1,500 placements, and the need will continue to grow as we increase our program enrollments. Securing and maintaining placements requires significant resources, including expert staff who can establish partnerships, complete extensive and often complex student clearance paperwork, secure onsite supervisors, and track and monitor our students’ learning experiences and outcomes. New faculty and staff will also be required in order to operate and maintain the extensive advanced technology in our new health care simulation center in order to maximize our students’ learning experiences.
Priority 3 - Faculty Research and Scholarship
Support the generation of knowledge in health and human services
A university is only as good as its faculty, and our college has attracted some of the best. Our faculty have robust scholarship agendas that generate knowledge in critical areas of health, health care, social services, and therapeutic interventions. Support is needed to create space for scholarly research that can be undertaken in partnership with our undergraduate and graduate students. Funds raised will provide the resources necessary to maintain our exceptional classroom teaching and learning while simultaneously expanding the amount and quality of research activity our faculty can pursue with our students.
Priority 4 - Financial Support for Our Students
Create opportunities for all students to pursue their dreams
Nothing else we do to improve the quality of a Southern education will matter if students and families can’t afford the opportunities we offer. Most of our students work while attending school in order to meet their basic financial requirements.
Student scholarships are among the University’s highest priorities. In addition, most internships and clinical placements in health and human services are unpaid but required for completion of degree programs. Many of our students cannot afford to take on unpaid internships in lieu of their regular paid jobs. Financial support can allow our students to transition, through unpaid internships, from their part-time jobs into their professional careers without the of burden taking on additional debt.
