Step Inside the New Home to Health and Human Services<\/p><\/h2><\/div>

Southern\u2019s new Health and Human Services Building opened to the next generation of healthcare and human services leaders in Fall 2022.<\/p>\n

The 94,750-square-foot space will serve as a hub for the majority of the renowned health and human services programs \u2014 fostering stronger interdisciplinary connections between students, faculty, and staff \u2014 and dramatically enhancing student learning experiences.<\/p>\n

Active learning spaces and natural light were prioritized in the <\/span><\/span>design, which encourages those within the various disciplines to work and learn together.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Faculty can collaborate on educational planning.<\/p>\n

Students will be exposed to areas outside their own disciplines \u2013 better preparing them for their future careers and enhancing our ability to offer exceptional interdisciplinary research and scholarship experiences.<\/p>\n

This building will house the School of Nursing and most departments within the College, including Communication Disorders; Health & Movement Sciences; Public Health; Recreation, Tourism, & Sport Management, and Health Systems & Innovation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Interprofessional Healthcare Simulation Center<\/h2><\/div>

This state-of-the art Simulation Center is outfitted with video capture technology, high fidelity manikins, modern hospital equipment, and Pyxis automated medication dispensing machines. The Center includes six simulated hospital rooms; four standardized patient rooms, home simulation suite; and two debriefing classrooms where students can view videotaped interactions with patient actors and manikins and consult with faculty supervisors and peers.

Nursing Classrooms and Teaching Labs<\/h2><\/div>

Each of the four labs includes six beds, six exam tables, state-of-the-art healthcare equipment and technology, and a teaching presentation area that seats 16 students.

Center for Communication Disorders, Teaching and Research Labs<\/h2><\/div>

Our Center provides speech, language, and hearing services to 150 clients (children and adults) from our community weekly, with video capture technology, eight medium and three large clinic rooms with adjoining observation areas, separate video observation room, and two language and learning research labs.

Demonstration Culinary Classroom <\/h2><\/div>

This fully outfitted kitchen seats 48 students and allows public health and other disciplines to provide hands-on instruction on food safety, food preparation, and nutrition practices. Our Tourism & Event Management program will offer cooking demonstrations and other events.

Audiology Clinic and Research Lab <\/h2><\/div>

Our three sound booths and large clinic area allow for assessments, research and services including hearing aid prescriptions and cochlear implant mapping.

Athletic Training Teaching Lab <\/h2><\/div>

Our large learning lab provides hands-on learning experiences for our Master of Science Athletic Training program. Includes 10 exam tables that turn into desks, a whirlpool bath, and an Anatomage\u00ae table for teaching anatomy and physiology concepts through manipulation of digital cadaver images.

Human Performance Facility <\/h2><\/div>

The CT Running Injury Clinic and laboratories for training students and assessing health, fitness, metabolism, health behaviors, cardiovascular physiology and biomechanics are located in this facility. Hands-on features Include a high-tech Bod Pod to measure body fat composition through air displacement, DEXA to measure bone density, and biomechanics lab with motion capture technology, force plates, and a high-tech treadmill for movement analysis.

Institute for Adapted Sport and Inclusive Recreation<\/h2><\/div>

One of the first of its kind in Connecticut, the Institute provides adapted sport and recreational opportunities for individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities; supervised by students from our Therapeutic Recreation programs.

The Center\u2019s open floor plan has a variety of meeting areas; five hoteling offices for adjunct faculty; and a central kitchen\/ breakroom for use by more than 100 faculty and staff who are housed in the building.
