To my fellow graduates, we finally made it! All those years of sleepless nights, late night eating to get that assignment turned in by 11:59, stressful moments trying to pass those exams…it all brought us here. The moment we can walk the stage. We survived a pandemic, transitions to online schooling, depression, anxiety and many more. And I know deep in my heart, we will continue to survive after graduation. I wish you all the best of luck in your futures! I have no doubt in my mind that each and everyone one of us will be great.

Favorite Time at SCSU

My favorite time at SCSU has to be freshmen year. I don’t know what it is about our class, but I think we were the most lit. Everyone was outside playing volleyball, catch in the grass and listening to music on the speaker. There were always basketball games going at the basketball court. We’d be outside until it was dark, just to come inside and build more bonds with our RA’s and each other in the community rooms. If I could go back, I’d go back to the memories I made freshmen year.

What are you going to miss the most, and what are you looking forward to the most?

I’m going to miss the family I made on Blue Steel Drumline. Spending at least 9 hours a week with the same people through performances and practices, it’s hard to not develop a bond. We’ve sweat together, cried together, and worked together. We’ve celebrated great performances and learned from the poor ones. The bond became deeper than banging drums and making music. They have become my family. And although I’m looking forward to starting my future as a teacher, I look forward to seeing how this drumline will continue to grow, even if I can no longer be a part of it as it does.

Advice to Incoming Students

To the incoming freshmen, it’ll be scary. You’re coming into a new environment with thousands of people you don’t know. It’s hard to find your place and you may feel like you don’t belong. Give it time. Join a club that has the same passions as you. Connect with those who push you to be better and genuinely care about your success. I promise once you do that, this will be one of the best experiences of your life.

I’m sure we all still can’t fathom that this moment has finally come. WE MADE IT! 🥳

Favorite Time at SCSU

My favorite time at Southern was definitely the carnival by CONN hall this spring semester. When I transferred from the University of New Haven, I had one solid semester before Covid happened. I wasn’t able to experience much, but being able to see everyone’s face at the carnival, enjoying their time with friends, warmed my heart.

What are you going to miss the most, and what are you looking forward to the most?

I’m excited for the next chapter of my life. It would be nice to say that I’m done with school, but I’ll be starting PT school at the University of Hartford this summer.

Advice to Incoming Students

My biggest regret was not getting involved on campus during my time here. Join a club; find a group of friends that will really enhance your experience at Southern! College is hard and stressful. You might at times find yourself screaming at the top of your lungs in your car after a stressing class, but YOU are all easily capable of greatness.

Favorite Time at SCSU

Being able to do all the dissections in the biology lab and being able to be a contributing author to a manuscript about a Genome.

What are you going to miss the most, and what are you looking forward to the most?

I am going to miss the fellowship between other students in the science labs, you really meet the funniest people there. I am looking forward to the future and what it holds for me as a Southern graduate.

Advice to Incoming Students

Don’t stress out too much, all the tears may seem not worth it but it really is once you cross that stage.
